About Us

At Birdhurst Day Nursery, we believe it is important to offer high quality care by understanding that your children's happiness and safety are paramount. We believe the first five years of a child's life lay the foundations for their future. It is our promise to you as parents to give your child the greatest opportunity for them to fulfil their potential in a learning environment that is comfortable, safe and healthy. We provide a range of opportunities to motivate, support and develop children, to help them to be involved, enjoy their experiences and learn effectively. We understand that children learn through play, and a wide range of experiences therefore create a fun and stimulating environment for all of our children.

If you would like to make an appointment to see the nursery, please contact us and we will be happy to show you around, introduce you to our staff team and answer any questions that you may have. We look forward to meeting you and your child.

Key Persons and staff group

We have a mixture of full and part time staff who hold or are working towards appropriate qualifications. We also have sessional workers on our team, which would not be complete without our nursery cook. Some of the staff have been with us for many years, and we have a good mix of younger and more mature staff, which overall provides a good level of experienced childcare.

Our staff are dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment in which your child can develop their social and learning skills. They have all undergone DBS checks, and Paediatric First Aid and Safeguarding Children training is updated regularly. We also give our staff good development opportunities and offer continuous training in order to keep them updated on the latest news within childcare.

All children have a member of staff assigned as their key person. The key person will normally be introduced to you and your child on their ‘settling in’ sessions with us. Settling in sessions are free of charge and begin just before your child’s first day.

Ethos, Aims and Values

Our ethos is to work with every family and child regardless of their ethnic background, race, colour, gender or religious beliefs.

We value each child and person and give a welcoming, caring, educational service to every child. Our aims are to provide the Early Years Foundation Stage to all children. In giving the babies and children the toys, activities and experiences to enable them to learn and develop. We want to promote their growth physically, emotionally and spiritually. As a Christian nursery we believe in helping children to learn and to develop and gain positive behaviour.

Activities are carried out with the children throughout the year celebrating different religions and the Christian faith. Children enjoy it when parents come into the nursery to share their festivals or other activities with the children.

Our ethos gives us the focus to treat others with respect, to care for each other and for the children who attend the nursery. We aim to be good role models for the children and to their families.

History of the Nursery

Birdhurst Day Nursery is run by Christian Family Concern, (CFC), a registered Charity Founded in 1893. CFC is a non-profit organisation, providing a range of services to help parents meet their children's needs, with the emphasis on working to keep families together. Birdhurst Day Nursery has been in operation for over 20 years. The Nursery building was constructed in 1968, and was originally opened as a children's home in 1970, as part of the Charity's adoption work, children's homes and mother and baby support services. The last children's home was closed in 1989 and the adoption agency closed in 1992, the work continues with our enthusiastic team running the Birdhurst Nursery, Wallis House Bedsit scheme and the Beracah Bedsit Scheme. Our families at the Nursery come from a huge range of backgrounds, having in common the need for high quality reliable childcare whist enabling them to work and meet the high cost of living in Croydon and the surrounding area. Our aim is to provide high quality childcare and a positive environment for families and young people from all sections of the community, within a Christian environment.

Make an appointment

Parents can make an appointment to visit the nursery by ringing 0208 681 3187

Appointments to view the nursery are generally made between 10.00am to 11.30am, Monday to Friday. This gives the opportunity for parents/carers to meet the staff, and to see the nursery in operation on a typical day. You will be able to see how the children play and learn and the interaction between children and staff. During the afternoons many of the children sleep, so it is more difficult then to see what goes on. However, we can arrange afternoon appointments (2.00-4.00pm) if you wish and the rooms can still be viewed.

We like to see your baby, child or children with you at the viewing so they are able to have a flavour of how nursery will be for them. This helps to see where your child will be best suited and what they like about our nursery. You are able to make a second appointment with your husband, wife, partner or family member if you would like, to ensure our nursery is best suited to your child. Again it is best if your child(ren) come with you to see how they respond to the other children and the nursery environment.

If you are unable to make an appointment and would like to just pop in to pick up a prospectus and registration form, you are welcome to do so at any time, but pleased be aware we may not have staff available to walk you around without booking first.
